The most important thing when working with reporters is to build a relationships of trust with key reporters that work on your beats. Just like any other professional relationship, don't abuse it. Do not send press releases that are pure sales pitches in disguise; send educational information and/or interesting news that their readers would be interested in. See yourself as adding value to the publication and helping the reporter to do his/her job better. Once a reporter comes to trust you, he/she will consistently read your pitches and ideas and come out and cover your clients. It's also very important to explain good media relations conduct to your clients. I ask clients not to ask the reporter to film things like posters, pictures of staff photos in the hallway, or other sales materials. I also ask clients not to waste a reporter's time and to concentrate on giving the reporter good stats, background, and interesting stories about a subject. For magazine or television reporters, don't forget to have great visuals prepared. It is not very interesting to see interviews done in an office setting. Have the reporter go right out to interesting workplaces, such as where you manufacture the product or go right to the wind plant. Interviews are much more interesting with wonderful visuals in the background. Just some things I have learned over the years ...

Jeff,
Some good basic advise. I differ slightly on one point. If a reporter or editor rejects a story I sometimes ask them if they would mind if I pitched it to someone else with a different beat or interest. For example a story about a new theater building at a college that is rejected by the higher ed writer might be of interest to an arts or real estate/business writer. The rejecting writer usually says be my guest or sometimes offers to pass the story along for me. I agree it is a mistake to pitch someone else without the knowledge and blessing of the first person contacted.

Interesting post, but rather offset by the myriad spelling and grammatical errors it contains - do they matter or not, since that was item number one?

I can't say I agree 100% on certain issues, but you definitely have an interesting way of writing thigs. Anyway, I appreciate the quality you add to the blogosphere and that this isn't just another abandoned, made-for-adsense site! Take care...

I agree with mike. I used to screen press releases when I worked as a copy editor at a local daily. I usually decided within 3 to 5 seconds whether to pass the release on to a reporter or editor or just trash it. Soon I was able to screen them simply by the name of the PR firm submitting the release.

Can't emphasize the headline thing enough.

You don't have 30 seconds, though, you have more like 3. And don't make them figure it out, make it completely obvious.
