I agree that companies need to monitor what is being said about them on social media but they also need to monitor complaint sites, Google Sidewiki, http://budurl.com/6d32 which allows users to post reviews right next to an organization's own website, and the many review sites on the web such as Yelp and Google maps http://bit.ly/arFFHc.

They also need a strategy to share their story when something bad does happen before their customers do. I wrote a blog post on the steps to take: http://bit.ly/bJRbUP

I agree with you 100%. While doing research on prospective client's current websites who are looking for improved visibility, it is unbelievable how many times I come across negative posts somewhere that the owner is not even aware of. Today, every single business should be doing reputation management! It's funny, I even came across negative information for a business that was requesting a quote on their first website. It just goes to show that with all the different social media sharing venues out there - you do not even need to be doing any Internet marketing or have an Internet presence in order to be hurt!

Bottom line: Every business must have a comprehensive method of Online Reputation Management.
