All true!
But the the mega stars mentioned are only one part--although often the most visible--of the music biz. There remains a very vibrant club scene that seems to sustain an audience willing to pay for a live performance and CD/files even if on a smaller scale. Perhaps the failure stems from hanging on to old ideas related to mass marketing.

I feel that it has less to do with the capacity of a disk and more to do with our frustration with the music industry an the "everything is free on the internet" mentality in our current pop culture. Downloading is getting tacit approval from moms, dads and the media and so it's has become acceptable. I think the baby boomers have the frustration for some of the reasons you mentioned and they're giving the "it's OK to steal" message to their children. It is stealing and we should have said so loudly and often. Instead we chuckle about it with our friends and perhaps engage in downloading ourselves. It's wrong, we have no excuse and it it hurting an industry we all care about. The rock stars always engaged in excess- go read Rolling Stone from the 70's. It no excuse for our behavior and there is no honest justification.
