PEST analysis! I love it!

I try to keep in mind that all clients are insane to some degree. That's okay, I'm crazy too. But I've been down this road before and that really helps when setting expectations.

I have to agree. As a freelance copywriter specializing in online marketing, I would say that about 50% of what I do is client education. They read some blog post somewhere that tells them all they have to do is get on Facebook and they'll be instant millionaires. They call me and expect it to just happen. I've never had a client walk away after I explain the realities of online marketing, that it's an ongoing effort, it takes time, and that depending on those factors outside of your control, sales may not triple.

Very good points, Jeff. I learned this lesson the hard way with a client who simply could not make a decision re her web presence and had the expectation that my company could create same with no input from her. I would suggest a detailed questionnaire that the client must complete before accepting the assignment. This will reveal much about expectations and serve to establish the responsibilities of each party for a successful result.
